A billowing form becomes the transition between the original dwelling and the extension, celebrating the coming together of old and new. The curved bulkhead feels weighty yet soft and is an example of compression and release in action. Many contemporary extensions to heritage homes are guided by similar parameters, follow similar ideologies and rely on a solid set of architectural principles. This works well in most cases, but stepping outside these boundaries can lead to surprising and thought-provoking architectures. Pursuing such an approach requires a combination of determination, pragmatism and courage from architects and clients.
For Rose Park Residences in Adelaide, Studio Gram has created a refreshing and unconventional home by slightly changing the rules of the house while retaining the essence of tradition. From the street, the beautiful Queen Anne villa appears in sync with the surrounding countryside. However, after crossing the threshold, a series of continuous spaces unfold, producing unexpected forms at the rear.
Studio Gram employs a number of accessible design principles throughout the residence. One of the family members uses a wheelchair, so the studio wanted to create an integrated, accessible design for the building - both for this client and future occupants. This has been integrated into the architecture, with ramps around the house and the wide thresholds being flush. They see it as seamless, showing that form and function don't always need to compete with each other.
When designing the extension, Studio Gram sought to create a form with a unique architectural character. "One of the things that really complicated the project was the resistance to putting a flat-roofed pavilion at the back," said Dave. Inside the building, a wavy curve extends upwards, connecting the existing structure with the apex of the new pitched roof.
"The curve can act as a threshold between old and new spaces, by using strategies of compressing and releasing old buildings, as a transition for the family from private to public space," said Dave. Two south-facing skylights accentuate at both ends The curved shape, balances the focal point of the room and brings natural light deeper. -
