Built in 1935, the Peace Pier is the first port of Xiamen. Facing Gulangyu Island across the sea, it has witnessed the rise and fall of Xiamen’s ports in the past hundred years. With its unique landscape and open-air environment, the owners wanted to recreate a traditional southern Fujian lifestyle at the top of the pier.

“Cheng” and “Xi” are taken as two important design intentions of this project. The food in Fujian Province ranges from seafood to mountain products. The people of southern Fujian who live by the sea are hospitable, love to eat and love to be lively. So in XIAO CHENG XI, “Xi” in addition to often puppets, a stage in the play, more understood as the food of men and women, human fireworks scene.

“Cheng”, on the other hand, is the open land in front of the house or surrounded by buildings. In addition, Fujian is mostly connected by blood and family ties. Therefore, “Cheng” is not only a place for drying, cooling and drying grain in harvest, but also a gathering and distribution space for festival guests, children playing and neighbors gossiping. It has many memories of public life of southern Fujian people in their childhood, and is a space bearing all kinds of human beings.

Trough the smoky wood stoves and several private ocean view rooms, then climb a wood stairs, you’ll find tables and chairs scattered among the shattered walls of cement, rammed earth, gray brick and bluestone. And the folk living utensils collected from Fujian, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and other places. The landscape is not carved, is to bow or turn the head is weeds, fruit trees, dead wood and streams, the four seasons have withered and glorious.

In this project, not the pursuit of a single material design language, on the contrary, we hope to allow and organize a considerable degree of inorganic and disorder in a overall control , rekindle the fire on the furnace, set a table banquet, build stage for opera, so that it “re-vitality”, reproduce a market fireworks food scene, is the link of “Cheng” and “Xi”. It is also the intention of this project.
