InForm Design is a family-owned architecture firm based in Melbourne, Australia, founded in 1994 by the McKimm family and now run by family members Cameron McKimm and Chris McKimm. The five-bedroom house, designed by InForm Design Studio, is a nod to mid-century modernism with simplicity and rigor. Timber slats and brick walls enliven the sturdy protective facade and soften it with a material texture of painted recycled brick and oiled wood.

The spectacular two-storey brick and stone box, comprising the bedroom, study and family study, is flanked by a single-storey timber and glass structure that includes the kitchen, dining area, living area and garage. The double and single-storey elements are separated by a central courtyard, with unique views from the foyer, study and main living pavilion.

A unique sculptural solution resolved the challenges of a narrow site, resulting in a light filled family oasis. The simple linear plan allows the wedge-shaped circulation spine to access all rooms on both levels. The wedge element also provides a dynamic entry hall and overhangs the open plan living space beyond, protecting it from the west. As well as a generous, extensively glazed living area, the ground floor also includes a study/ lounge, while the upper level accommodates three bedrooms and a rumpus.

The studio completed a red-brick building on the outskirts of Rosanna in Melbourne. The recycled red brick and white clapboard building sits on a sloping site, echoing the natural topography and the area's 1970s modernist architecture. The result of the lack of a trend in the mixing of materials and finishes is timeless. The neutral tones focus on natural materials such as concrete, wood, brick and wool, giving the house a real spirit. Locally recycled bricks, white clapboard and exposed wooden pergolas borrow from the local architecture.

A series of stepped concrete floors rise from the grounds and around the central courtyard. Variations in floor finishes and ceiling heights help to alter the character and mood of the space to suit specific activities. Large sliding doors and Windows open to the garden, facilitating cross ventilation throughout the house. The kitchen, dining area and living area overlook the swimming pool and gardens in the southern courtyard, extending north to the covered recreation area below the cantilevered upper level. A custom-designed smoker creates a unique character that adds character to this casual and relaxing outdoor setting.
