Vincent Van Duysen, a Belgian minimalist architect is good at stripping the complex externalities of things and restoring their essence without affecting comfort. Here are their two latest works.
VO Residence
Knokke, a Belgian seaside village, is known for its refined white holiday homes with gabled roofs. Situated alongside the Royal Golf Course, this permanent home for the owner and his family allows beautiful wide views across the golf course and onto its protected private gardens, designed by Martin Wirtz.
Belgian architecture Vincent Van Duysen brings together an eclectic variety and contrast of different styles from different historical periods. The house is positioned besides a golf course, allowing wide, picturesque views across the lawns and onto its private gardens, which were designed by landscape architect Martin Wirtz. A large, thatched roof provides a feeling of protection and introversion; its low-hanging edges add to the character and charm of the exterior, whilst still presenting as contemporary. The roof is supported by monolithic, whitewashed brick volumes, which arrange the house both spatially and functionally. “These primary architectural elements define the strong and modern character and expression of the house,” explains a statement from Van Duysen.
‘VO Residence’ moves beyond tradition. The home’s interior is characterized by a variety of different textures and finishes, bringing “variation within the bounds of a similar design approach and atmosphere,” the architect continues. The dark wood, double-height ceiling in the living room stands in contrast to the lower ceiling of the kitchen, which, clad in natural wood and charcoal-colored tiles, makes for a comfortable space for entertaining. Custom-designed furniture and interiors add to the refined atmosphere, which the architect asserts are “finely detailed and elegant, sophisticated, and in contrast to the raw expression of the thatched roof and the cement-washed brickwork textures”. The arresting architectural home is further complemented by a terrace, an outdoor swimming pool, and an adjacent pool house.

Vincent van Duysen always look for clues in the tradition in a contemporary way, he reinterprets the archetypical Flemish farm in a modern way. The project has several parts that form a hierarchy: a main building with multipurpose use for the production of wine and a tasting room, outbuildings for agricultural equipment and a dwelling.
Vincent van Duysen have embedded the project in the existing landscape and pay tribute in a contemporary way to the typical old agricultural buildings in the rural area of ??Klein Brabant. The most important common factor of asparagus cultivation and viticulture is that both require a linear planting and ensure a horizontal image in the landscape. They gladly responded to this and let the buildings enter into dialogue with the landscape.
The architects' approach is defined by the use of pure and tactile materials that result in a clear and timeless design. Their attention goes out to a purity of aesthetics. Fundamental aspects of a Flemish farm and the concept of a square farmhouse were retained as a starting point.
The use of concrete and wood in this project contrasts with the landscape. The brown-grey concrete forms the foundation of the building. The dark wood is Northern European larch in combination. The surroundings, the courtyard and the entrance square are paved in lava rock that connects with the earthly environment, in order to connect to the earthy character of its surroundings and allow water to infiltrate the ground.
Vincent van Duysen
Van Duysen likes to apply layers and contrast to achieve a sensuality to his designs. The stratification does not lie in a multitude of materials, but can be described as a minimizing down to the essence through which authenticity, simplicity and purity are achieved.
