BES BRANDING--

This is the hotel building standing in the Xiangcheng District of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. The site is located in a redevelopment area of the district, will be surrounded by office buildings for artificial intelligence and biotech companies in the near future, and a 3km-long riverfront park is planned to be built nearby. Situated in the heart of the redevelopment area, the hotel was expected to play a key role in showing the attitude for the whole city development as the first step in the transformation from a farming village to a tech town.

The hotel is located at the southeast corner of a crossroads where two main streets intersect. 16,000 square meters of total floor space is required, but if the building is stacked up in accordance with the regulations to make a conventional “standing lunch box” shape, the scale of the building seems too small compared to the width of the eight-lane wide streets. In addition, the lunch box building would have created a strong front-face in only one direction, which definitely is not very appropriate for the location at the crossroads. Furthermore, since it is an intersection of main streets, the building should be set back as much as possible to open up the common space to the public, which we thought would be a conscience as the first runner of urban development.

The building’s layout plan is arranged in an L-shape, with each side of the “L” set back from the opposing street to the maximum extent. The vacant square of the land made by setting the building back is excavated down to the B1F level to create a sunken garden for the public to use. At the boundary between the road and the garden we made a stair-stepped green belt, so that passersby can descend into the sunken garden from any side of the surrounding roads. The ground in front of the building changed into the hole, then two bridges were built passing over it, so that hotel guests can approach to the entrance lobby by crossing over them. This architectural promenade and crossing a bridge experience were intended to create the drama of getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city to an another world.

The library, bookstore, bar, restaurant, gym and swimming pool are placed on the 1st and B1F level inside the building, which are facing the sunken garden, and are directly accessible from the outside as public facilities. Since the anew city is still undergoing redevelopment processes with nothing around it, the fundamental concept for this layout plan is depending on the desire to contribute to urbanization by opening up these functions to the city, and to leave a massage to following developers of this attitude to open up as much space as possible to the city public.

The architecture looks somewhat eccentric in appearance, but its shape is actually a straightforward response to the surrounding cityscape. Two small rivers flow by the site, one running east-west on the south side and the other running north-south at 100M west from the site (The river to the west is projected to be developed into riverside park in the future). The volume of the building is determined by the distance between these two rivers and our place. The southern river flows very close by. Therefore, the view from the lower floors should be enjoyable, and if the riverbank is set up as a deck terrace, the ground surface could be used as an open café. The river to the west is a little further away. Therefore, it is suitable for viewing from the upper floors, and from the upper floors, we can enjoy the beauty of the riverside park from all the windows without being annoyed by the bustle of the road directly below. Each of the low-rise and high-rise parts of the building extends along the direction of the river flow, so that residents can enjoy the beauty of the riverbank. Since the two rivers flow orthogonally to each other, the direction of the two volumes also twisted by 90 degrees. As a natural result for this logic, half of the upper floors float in the air.

The 7th floor, where the low-rise and high-rise overlap, is working as the mega-frame structure. The cross bracing composes spatial mega-beams, then the upper floors lying on that. The seventh floor is used for offices, conference rooms and an event hall, so the presence of the big structure does not affect the interior space so much. The crossing corner of the L-shape plan is used as flow core for guests move and distribution services, and also serves as the structural core to resist the different vibrating movement of the lower and upper floors.

Let’s move on to the details. There are two reasons for making a barrack-like facade shape which is composed of disparate shaped slabs stacking disorderly. One is to reduce the sense of oppression on the exterior appearance. If slabs of the same shape were stacked up straightly like a box and floated in the air, it would look quite ostentatious when viewed from the ground. This is a hotel, no needs to appear its dignity nor authority to the public, but rather it should stand in a democratic way, standing close to the people. When I once saw the Kowloon Fortress in Hong Kong, I was overwhelmed by its hugeness, but at the same time I felt a certain nostalgia. It somewhat resembled baroque architecture, the excessiveness of the forms caused a multifocal dissipation, and the eyes did not stay in one place, but rather trembled as if it were wandering over the surface of objects. The Kowloon Fortress was actually filled with a vast amount of objects, and because of this, it was multifocal and did not allow the eye to form a single image easily. I feel that was an achievement of mankind which has retreated from being an object to a “phenomenon” thoroughly. I wondered if our hotel could follow in this footsteps and retreat toward a baroque or barracks-like phenomenon. The collections of louvers as a mass in various scales, arranged irregularly like a toothless pattern, resemble the aspect of barracks and its miscellaneous scales.

Biverse interior spaces and terraces © BES BRANDING

The other reason is to realize the diversity of the interior designs. The building is unusual for an urban hotel in that more than half of the guest rooms have balconies. Irregularly stacked slabs create various shapes of balconies between them, change the amount of sunlight come into each room, and control a visibility from ground-level in places. Some rooms have a large balcony as almost the same size as inside, some rooms have open-air garden without roofs, and some have a bathroom near window etc. Diversely stacked up layers of slabs create a variety of room spaces beneath them, and the inevitable result is that almost every room in the hotel has a different design. The client’s desire to build an urban hotel that would also be used for leisure purposes was half-automatically realized through this simple methodology of irregularly stacked slabs.

The volume of the high-rise floating in mid-air appears to be very unique in this underdeveloped vast land. The form of the building, which seems to be lifted up by thin pillars and juts out into the air, could be described as a pilotis or cantilever, but there is a strangeness and a sense of existence here that cannot be explained by that alone. The principle of this trick is simple: the weight can be perceived because they are stacked up separately. The weight can be visually perceived as the sum of the weights of each layer. Because the weight can be measured with the eyes, dynamism is generated when the piece is lifted. Here is gravity and its drama that can be experienced with the body.

Building stand in the city © BES BRANDING

Our hotel has stood alone in the middle of a redevelopment area. This is how the first move was made in the grand game of chess called urban development. Various buildings will be constructed around the hotel in the future. And each time, they will cast a glance at this hotel and sometimes build something as a response to this first move, and sometimes as a rebellion against it. Our architecture is standing bravely in the vast countryside, as if it were a singularity set down on the immaculate chess board, like a foreign substance. It is charged with gravity, or bounces off it, with heroic dancing steps. Eventually, when the surrounding buildings rise up, our architecture recedes toward the phenomenon. The grandiose cantilever will disappear, buried in the forest of buildings. The height that seemed to soar is more often looked down upon. Then, the form suddenly disappears from the architecture. Only the clutter of slabs piled up in pieces, only the disquiet of louvers arranged in incoherent rows, embraces the crossroad in a bewitching atmosphere. The hero goes down to the streets to sell their wares, and are never seen again in the crush of crowds. This is how our architecture is completed finally. In a world overflowing with forms and objects, it stands alone as a formless shape, or as a wandering fog, solitarily, gracefully, with fragrant of amorous barracks.
