James Turrell
James Turrell is an American contemporary artist born in 1943 and is considered a pioneer of the "Southern California Light and Space Movement". Perhaps he has never heard of his name, but his works are often active in the public eye. He is good at using space and light as creative materials. For many years, he has been exploring the various possibilities of light as a medium.
James Turrell's father was an aeronautical engineer and his mother was a doctor. Perhaps his parents' careers exposed him to science from an early age, leading him to a degree in perceptual psychology at Pomona College in 1965. He was also exposed to mathematics, geography and astronomy before attending the University of California to study the arts. This choice confirms his curiosity and exploration of the two ends of the universe and the human inner world.
Go inside to greet the light(走进自己,迎接光)。
With great interest, James Turrell earned his pilot's license at the age of 16 and accumulated more than 12,000 flying hours. He moves through the clouds, feeling the gathering and spreading of light wrapped around him. He was shocked by this rare experience. The horizon is so vast, and the perception of this moment is selfless. These experiences bring light closer, both physically and psychologically, to James Turrell, who is steeped in Quakers and whose religious backgrounds undoubtedly lend light a more spiritual mystique and transcendence in his work. He was always going inside to greet the light.
— James Turrell
As a viewer, the scene in front of us is often short, but what is really profound is cognition. James Turrell's experience with light tracing tells people the difference between seeing and seeing. What you see is not what you see. James Turrell USES natural light to create a stunning series of works that blend light, space and the viewer's perception to create a unique experience for each viewer. Light does not touch, but James Turrell's work is a living object, an open feast. “My work is more about your seeing than it is about my seeing, although it is a product of my seeing.”— James Turrell
Light, sight and cognition are three elements that form the core of James Turrell's work. When many people think of beauty, they may think of a flower, a solid work of art, or a beautiful landscape. The definition of beauty varies from person to person, but the real experience is inestimable. This "see" process, itself is a unique aesthetic experience.
Those who observe "light" feel beauty by sight. The pursuer of "light" interprets beauty through perception. We all live under the sky, but few of us really feel it. The universe as we see it is a gallery of sorts, and works of art live only in the imagination.
